How to choose colored pencils you will love using
For coloring books and everyday drawing, look for pencils that glide comfortably over paper and allow shading without heavy pressure. Softer cores help fill larger areas, while firmer ones suit fine details. Paper matters too: its surface affects how color is applied and layered.
Artist colored pencils are useful for smooth transitions, layering and intricate details. Consider pigmentation, core characteristics and, for work you plan to display, the lightfastness of individual colors where the manufacturer provides it. The number of pencils alone does not determine a set's quality.
Watercolor pencils combine drawing and painting. Use them dry or blend the marks with a damp brush to create soft transitions and washes. Choose watercolor paper that can better withstand moisture.
Choose school and children's colored pencils to suit the child's age and hand size. A comfortable grip, easy color application and a strong core are important. A thicker barrel can help smaller hands; choose a triangular or hexagonal shape according to what feels comfortable.
A small set or a broad palette? A manageable set of basic colors is a good starting point. More shades are useful if you enjoy subtle variations or want a particular color without extensive layering. How the pencils feel and work matters more than the size of the tin.
Individual colored pencils let you replace frequently used colors, add a missing shade or try another range before buying a full set. Check both the range name and color number: the same color name can mean different tones across brands.
