Oil Pastels
Oil pastels for rich color and joy in every stroke
Bold areas of color, energetic strokes and playful drawing without a brush. Oil pastels bring color directly to paper and, depending on the range, allow layering, overlapping and mixing shades. Try them for flowers, landscapes, abstract motifs or freely exploring color.
At Krajinka, you will find artist oil pastels as well as children's pastels and crayons. Choose from brands such as Sennelier, Paul Rubens, Faber-Castell, Carioca and Staedtler. Alongside classic shades, discover metallic, pearlescent and iridescent options.
Choose a smaller set for your first attempts or a broader palette for varied color combinations. For children, also consider the recommended age and the size and shape of the pastels so they are comfortable to hold.

How to choose oil pastels
For children’s creativity or artistic experiments?
Choose children’s sets according to age and grip. A thicker body or ergonomic shape can make handling easier for younger children. For artist pastels, focus on softness, pigmentation and layering behavior. The terms “crayons” and “oil pastels” sometimes overlap in product names; the properties of the particular range are what matter.
Softness affects the mark and blending
Softer pastels may build dense color layers more easily, while firmer pastels offer a different way of making strokes. To get to know the material, make a swatch: try light and stronger pressure, overlap two shades and use both the edge and broad side of the pastel.
Choose a suitable surface
Start with paper suitable for oil pastels and other dry art techniques. Its texture and strength affect application and layering possibilities. Before using the pastels in a coloring book, test whether the mark suits you and whether color transfers to the opposite page.
Water solubility is not a given
Standard oil pastels cannot automatically be used like watercolor pastels. Water-soluble versions do exist, however. If you want to work on the drawing with a damp brush, choose a product whose manufacturer explicitly states this property and use paper suitable for wet techniques.
Metallic and pearlescent shades for interesting accents
Use special-effect pastels on their own or to complement a classic palette. Their appearance changes with the surface and lighting. Before adding them to a finished picture, test them on the same paper you will be using.
Protect the finished work from rubbing
Oil pastels do not behave like oil paints, and their surface may remain sensitive to touch. Any protective product must be suitable specifically for the material used; a fixative for dry pastels may not be appropriate. Adapt storage or framing to the particular range and prevent direct contact between the drawing and glass.
